ASU + WEGO Taiwan Summer Engineering Camp: Inspiring the Next Generation of Roboticists

I had the opportunity to represent Arizona State University at the ASU + WEGO Taiwan Summer Engineering Camp hosted by Taipei Wego Private Bilingual Senior High School in Taipei, Taiwan.

The program brought together faculty, graduate students, and high school students for a week of hands-on engineering education centered around robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and autonomous systems.

Curriculum

Our robotics cohort introduced high school students to concepts that are typically encountered at the undergraduate level, including:

  • Calculus fundamentals
  • Linear Algebra and Matrices
  • Robot Kinematics
  • Forward Kinematics
  • Homogeneous Transformation Matrices
  • Coordinate Frame Transformations
  • Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks
  • Computer Vision
  • Hands-on Robotics Programming and System Integration

The emphasis throughout the camp was on learning by building. Students were encouraged to move beyond theory and develop complete robotic systems that integrated mechanics, perception, and AI.

Student Projects

Within a short period, student teams designed and demonstrated several fully functional projects, including:

Autonomous Tic-Tac-Toe Robot

A fully autonomous robotic system capable of playing Tic-Tac-Toe using AI and computer vision.

Industrial Vision-Guided Robotic Sorting System

An industrial automation demonstration integrating:

  • Computer Vision
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Conveyor System
  • Vision-Guided Robotic Manipulation

  • Presentation

  • Video

AI-Based Garbage Sorting System

Students developed an AI-assisted waste classification system capable of automatically categorizing different types of garbage.

AI Face Recognition System

A computer vision application for automated member identification using facial recognition.

Reflections

One of the most rewarding aspects of the camp was watching students quickly progress from mathematical foundations to implementing complete AI-enabled robotic systems. Their curiosity, creativity, and willingness to experiment made the experience especially rewarding.
